What is a pellet barbeque?

Pellet barbeques and smokers aren’t new to the grilling game. They first popped onto the scene back in the 1970s, during the oil crisis, in the search for alternative heat sources. Eventually in the mid 1980s, Joe Traeger (Traeger Wood Fired Grills), developed and patented the early Traeger pellet grill. As a result of their patent, Traeger went on to become the sole manufacturer of pellet grills for 20 years. Once the patent was up, other grill companies entered the market with similar technologies, bringing us to where we are today.

What is a wood pellet?

Wood pellets are exclusively made for pellet barbeques and smokers. They’re usually thin, tablet-shaped rods that are about the thickness of a pencil. When they’re burned, they produce a smoke that adds flavour to any food you wish to cook. They’re most often made from hardwoods such as Oak, Alder, Hickory, Apple and Cherry, with each type of wood infusing its own unique flavour into your food.

How do pellet barbeques work?

Pellet barbeques and grills are fuelled by small tablet-shaped wood pellets, rather than gas or coal. They’re then poured into the hopper, usually by the side of the grill, which then feeds into a cooking chamber powered by an auger. Through the process of combustion, the pellets ignite and heat up the cooking chamber, delivering a deliciously smoky heat source to the grill. The result? A gorgeous, succulent, and smoky flavour infused into your food.

What can you cook on a pellet barbeque?

When we say anything, we mean anything! Pellet grills are super diverse, and their ability to grill, sear, smoke or roast is what makes them so popular. You can cook anything from burgers, pulled pork, ribs, pies, vegetables and so much more. All with a unique and deep flavour that can only be achieved with a pellet barbeque. There are so many different types of pellets to choose from too, made with a variety of different woods and infusions, to really make the most of your pellet barbeque.

What are the benefits of using a pellet barbeque?

The pellet barbeque’s ability to cook in such a wide range of ways, as well as their precise temperature capabilities, make for an easy and uncomplicated grilling session. Simply set to the temperature you desire and chill out – no need to babysit. With many of these grills, you can even control the temperature from your smartphone via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, controlling the grill as and when you wish.

The Barbeque Shop’s Top 3 Pellet Barbeque Brands

Broil King

This North American brand is Canada’s favourite grill, and we can see why. Having made their mark throughout Spain and Portugal, their high-quality manufacturing techniques, coupled with heavy-gauge steel, makes these durable performance grills a first-class choice in pellet barbeques.

Traeger

Joe Traeger paved the way for pellet grills back in the 1980s and held the patent for the method for over 20 years. Decades later, the Traeger brand is still one of the most recognisable brands in the pellet grill industry.

Weber

This classic barbeque brand has developed their own range of pellet grills. The SmokeFire range might not provide as much choice as its competitors, but it still packs a mean punch, with lots of features designed to enhance the grilling experience.
